Ksilouris Nikos

Nikos Ksilouris was born in Anogeia at 1936 and passed away from cancer at 1980. His family has a long tradition in music and his grandfather was the well known Lyre player called Karamouzandonis. His father, Giorgos Ksilouris was an excellent dancer and singer, but his wish was for his children to get educated rather than follow the music tradition of the family, because, during these years working as a traditional music player was not an easy task. However, due to the teacher of Nikos Ksilouris, his father decided to buy him his first lyre. Very soon Nikos Ksilouris became well known in the wider area playing music at gatherings and weddings. At his 17 years of age decided to work in the city of Iraklion, but encountered many difficulties as the residents in urban centers during that period did not listen to traditional Cretan music.

A very important place for Nikos Ksilouris career and Cretan music was the first Cretan music entertainment center in Iraklio called "Erotokritos" in 1967. From that point in time he became known not only to the Cretans but also to the entire country. In 1969 Nikos Ksilouris decided to move to Athens in order to start his wonderful career singing not only in Cretan gatherings but for the majority of Greek composers. His album with Cretan folk songs was a very important point for music during the dictatorship years, as well as his participation at the theatrical play "To megalo mas tsirko" (Our big circus) with Tzeni Karezi and Kostas Kazakos at "Athinaion" theatre in 1973. The unique exponation, the passion and the physical presence of Nikos Ksilouris made him famous and lovesome to the entire country. His own personal touch is visible in every single song that he sang.
