Kourtaliotiko Gorge (NATURA 2000 region)
The gorge begins at Koxare village and follows the bank of Kourtaliotis River. It is an imposing, narrow gorge of wild beauty. Its sides are full of springs and caves. When the wind blows, one can here sounds that resemble the sound of applause or rattles, which are called "kourtala" in the local dialect. The gorge was named after this kind of sound. In the distance flows Kourtaliotis River ending up near the Monastery of Preveli. The church of Agios Nikolaos is at the gorge. According to tradition, when the saint touched the rock, plenty of water gushed out immediately from the points his fingers had touched. These are the five springs of Kourtaliotis River that can be found near the church. Not far from there, in the little church of Agios Georgios, there is a painting of Agia Triada, where the Holy Spirit comes out of the Father's lips as a dove, a unique icon in the whole of Greece. At the end of the gorge, there is a landscape that reminds of a tropical lake and is called the Palm Tree Lake.
