Mountros
Mountros belongs to the Municipality of Fokas. It is 23 km far from Rethymno on a 280 m altitude and has 216 residents. It is mentioned in all Venetian censuses of the 16th and 17th centuries. In the 1881 and 1900 censuses, it is mentioned in the municipality of Roustika, with approximately 370 residents. Since 1920 it has been mentioned with its own community.
G. Gerola reports that he visited a Venetian house at Mountros, which had an inscription on the door linteln from Virgil's Aeneid. The village is divided in two neighbourhoods called Panohori and Katohori and there is a fountain in each of them.
There are many churches in the village, such as Agios Konstantinos, Agioi Anargiroi (11th century) and the parish church of Agios Nikolaos.
At Pera Mountros site, there are the springs of Kominovrisi and Halase. In the west of the village, there is Mountriano Gorge, which is 1500 m long.
