Agios Mamas
Agios Mamas is a village that belongs to the Municipality of Geropotamos. It is 39 klm away from Rethymno at an altitude of 460 m at the northern banks of Psiloritis with a population of 600 residents along with the residents of Argalio, Kastri and Avdela dorps.
The name of the village was taken by the name of Agios Mamas, from Kapadokia in Asia Minor. Due to the mountainous location of the village, stockbreeding was the main occupation of the residents and this is reason why he was the patron saint of animals.
The village was first built during the 13th century. It is known that the Venetians in 1433 built the village called Argalio, where Agios Mamas was a patron saint. The oldest families of the village are the ones of Alefandinoi, Archontakides, Roussakides, Zourides. In addition to stockbreeding, the residents are also occupied with agriculture, the production of olive oil, locust beans and horticulture.
