Monastery of Diskourios

At a bigger distance from the Monastery of Christos Chalepas, there is the Monastery of Diskourios and at an equal distance, if we follow the route from Garazo towards Aksos , 43 klm from Rethymno. The local tradition insists that at the site of the Monastery, there was a temple of Dioskouroi, without however any proof of its existence. The connection of the area with the name of Zeus is no coincidence. The Monastery had a special relationship with the sacred mountain and the cave of Zeus, Idaion Andron. The age of the monastery is proven by the existence of a unique wall painting of the Byzantine church of Agios Ioannis Prodromos near the Monastery. These facts indicate the existence of an important religious centre in the area.
