Villandredo
VILANDREDO
Vilandredo is 34 km far from Rethymno. The route to Vilandredo is: First intersection at the 30th km of the road coming from Argiroupoli. The village is on a 380 m altitude. In the 1981 census it was mentioned that the village had 87 residents.
It is first mentioned in the 1881 census with the name Vilandredo, in the municipality of Argiroupoli, with 113 Christian residents.
Its name is Venetian and stems from the word Villandredo, which means Andredo's mansion. The fact that this name is not mentioned in the 16th and 17th century Venetian censuses leads to the conclusion that this was a private area during the Venetian occupation.
The village is surrounded by woods and especially arbutuses, which provide animals with food. In the wider area of Vilandredo, it is worth visiting Filippou cave, on a 300 m, for its stalagmitic richness. Vilandredo is a verdurous area with abundant water. A water pipe between Vilandredo and Argiroupoli, which leads to a cistern, has existed here for a long time. Vilandredo is a farming and stockbreeding village.
