Kato Rodakino
The municipal office of Rodakino includes the following dorps: Ano Rodakino, Kato Rodakino, Korakas and Polirizo. It has 428 residents according to the 2001 census. It is a good example of scattered residence, which later took the form of two autonomous dorps divided by a steep gorge.
It is 47 km southwest of Rethymno, west of Sellia village, and it is built amphitheatrically on two hills. According to some opinions, it was named after a peach tree (rodakinia) that had grown in the area which was considered as a significant event, due to the dryness of this landscape. Others say that the village took this name because the horizon, as seen from these villages, has the shape of a peach. There are also some people who support that this name was given to these villages because their residents' faces are rosy because of the sun. Another view supports that, because Ano Rodakino and Kato Rodakino are divided by a gorge, along which a dry stream called "Rikinthos" used to flow, the name "Rikinthos" changed into "Rodakino".
According to tradition, the present village has existed since 1600 approximately, when a resident, who got away from the village's destruction during the Venetian years and had flown to Mani of Lakonia, came back to the village with his three children and rebuilt the destroyed village. This probably explains why the residents of Rodakino are called "Maniates" by the residents of other villages.
Between the two dorps, on the left, there is a crossroad towards the beautiful beaches of Korakas (350 m long), Polirizos (250 m long) and the beach of Agia Marina (1000 m long), which is one of great natural beauty.
