Zaros
Monastery of Vrondisi: The Monastery of Vrondisi lies on the western side of Zaros village. Its foundation is dated before 1204/1211, that is before the Venetian occupation. It is possibly connected to the ascetic tradition that started in Crete during the Second Byzantine era (961-1204/11), an era for which there are not enough historical facts. It played an important part during the period of the Cretan Renaissance. It was the Center of Education and Art, while it was the place where many scholars and book penmen took their monastic vows. The wall paintings that were rescued in the katholikon are dated back to the 14th century and it seems that were affected by the Palaiologios Renaissance. The characteristics of the wall-painted interior reveal the age of the monastery and the high quality of the art that was developed in the monastery during the second half of the 14th century. An important sample of the artistic tendencies of the monastery is the embossed fountain in the entrance, with the embossed representation of Adam and Eve (15th century). It seems that the monastery was active during the 16th century.
