Zaros
The origin of the word comes from the plural form "Za" and the verb "reo","- rous" which means many waters.
The capital of Zaros lies in a distance of 45 klm south of Iraklio, built in a green valley at the banks of Psiloritis. It is a village with a long history that is confirmed by the Minoan findings at Kourtes and the remains of the Roman reservoir, from which ancient Gortina supplied water, as well as from the Byzantine Monasteries of the area.
Zaros was well known for its water, an inexhaustible resource of bliss for the land. Here, the factory for table water bottling is active since 1988. Irrigation works covering a large area have been built, fertile lands and fields have been cultivated and the artificial lake of Zaros with the two vivariums of trout is active.
