Roustika
The village of Roustika is 21 km far from Rethymno. It is a beautiful big village with 310 residents and it is built on a 290 m altitude, at an amphitheatrical lush green location. It was first mentioned in the 1577 censuses and preserves until now its architectural physiognomy. During the Venetian occupation, Roustika was included in the feud of the Barozzi family. At Boutsounargia site, between Roustika and Ag. Konstantinos, there is the grandiose fountain of Barozzi.
In the village center, there is the church of Koimisis Theotokou, which dates back to 1380 AD and has wall paintings in the northern nave. In the southeast of the village, there is the Monastery of Profitis Ilias, which began to be built in 1637, according to its inscriptions. The monastery played an important role during the Turkish occupation, when it functioned as a school and took part in the revolution fights.
