Episkopi

Traditional settlement of Episkopi

Episkopi settlement belongs to the Municipality of Kouloukonas in the Prefecture of Rethymno. It has an altitude of 270 m and lies 35.5 klm from Rethymno. The entire settlement has been characterized as a traditional settlement by the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works and has been declared as a historic monument with a surrounding protected space.

Episkopi possibly took its name from the centre of the episcopate of Avlopotamos. During the Turkish invasion (1669-1878) it was the centre of the Milopotamos province, because the Byzantine and Latin episcopate became a Shelter for the Crypto-Christians.
