Mirthios

The lush green village of Mirthios is 20 km far from Rethymno and it is located on a 480 m altitude on the foot of Vrisinas Mountain. It has 88 residents. Its name derives from the plant called myrtle. The village is first mentioned during the Venetian occupation as the feud of a Venetian family. In the 16th century censuses it is mentioned as MIRTIO DI MEGAPOTA.

In the hilly parts of this area, there are remains of forts that belong to towers with embrasures, which are called "Kouledes". The Cultural Association building is impressive.
