Agies Pente Parthenes (Holy Five Virgins)

In the northwest of Argiroupoli, at a 1 km distance approximately, there are five toms in a cave, where Agies Pente Parthenes (Holy Five Virgins) were believed to be buried after martyring in the years of Roman emperor Decius, in 250 AD approximately. On the tombs, from which holy water guts out, a small church has been built and is dedicated to Agies Pente Parthenes. The church celebrates on the first Tuesday after Easter. After recent research, many tombs have been found in the wider area, which date back to the years of Octavian. The area is lush green and very beautiful. The temple of Pente Parthenes lies in the archaeological site of Argiroupoli, at the site of the cemetery of ancient Lappa. It is a single-naved arched building of small size. According to the local tradition, Agies Pente Parthenes were buried at this place. Archaeological findings support the view that this place was a family tomb-mausoleum of the Roman period. En extensive cemetery dating back to the Roman years has been discovered in recent years. The rich findings of the excavations and, also, those that had been collected before systematic excavations started, among which are two marble statues and a copper statuette, are now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymno.
