Asi Gonia

Asi-Gonia is a mountainous village in the Prefecture of Rethymno. It has a population of 800 stockbreeders, which is constantly rising.
Historically, Asi-Gonia is mentioned as a dorp governed by the Roman city of Lappa, which is now called Argiroupoli. The village has been mentioned in official documents since the Venetian era and the original dorp used to be more towards the east than the modern one.
Asi-Gonia has been associated with a unique custom in Crete, the one of blessing the flocks on the name day of Agios Georgios. The area's shepherds consider Ai-Giorgis as their patron saint and, on 23 April, they come to A-Giorgis Galatas church with their flocks.
