Agios Konstantinos

The village of Agios Konstantinos belongs to the Municipality of Nikiforos Fokas. It is built on a 250 m altitude and it is 16 km far from Rethymno. Its name first appeared in the documents concerning feuds distribution among the Twelve Noblemen families. These documents, despite all doubts about their originality, are an important historical source. The village was granted to Hortatzis family and continued to be inhabited durind the Venetian years, as mentioned in the three Venetian censuses by Barozzi (1577), Kastrofilakas (1583) and Basilicata (1630).

During the Venetian occupation, the village was a feud of Baroci family, which explains the existence of a manor and a fountain owned by the same family.
