Koxare: In 1866, a fort near "KOULES" castle is built by the conquerors for a better defence against rebels. Part of this fort is still saved.

In the south of this part of the E4, above the village of Atsipades, there is Karavellas hill (510 m), on the peak of which there was a great Minoan sanctuary.

At Kato Mixorouma village, there are impressive watermills and dwellings used for the washing of clothes on the river banks.

The village of Pano Mixorouma is now the last basketry centre in Crete. The byzantine church of Agios Ioannis is also worth a visit.

Rows of watermills are saved in the valleys of Dariviana and Spili.

In the village of Spili visitors are impressed by the abundance of water coming out of 25 lion heads, the gorge of Faraggas in Papas region, and the churches of Metamorfosis Sotira, Agios Georgios, Agios Theodoros and Koimisis Theotokou, with their byzantine wall-paintings. It is also worth visiting two watermills still maintained in very good condition. Also, a Venetian bell at Spili dating back to 1618, which is saved in the cathedral (Evaggelismos Theotokou) and has embossed pictures of saints, is a remnant from the years of the Venetian occupation.
